Losing the Contraceptive Lottery

From the Susan B. Anthony List’s email this morning…. Further evidence of our messiah in chief’s continuing disregard for human life. Check out some quotes from his latest nomination, Dawn Johnsen:

Mothers are Losers

“The argument that women who become pregnant have in some sense consented to the pregnancy belies reality…and others who are the inevitable losers in the contraceptive lottery no more ‘consent’ to pregnancy than pedestrians ‘consent’ to being struck by drunk drivers.’”

Pregnant Women are Fetal Containers

“The woman is constantly aware for nine months that her body is not wholly her own: the state has conscripted her body for its own ends. Thus, abortion restrictions ‘reduce pregnant women to no more than fetal containers.’”

Pregnancy equals Slavery

“Statutes that curtail her abortion choice are disturbingly suggestive of involuntary servitude, prohibited by the Thirteenth Amendment, in that forced pregnancy requires a woman to provide continuous physical service to the fetus in order to further the state’s asserted interest.”

All of these outrageous statements were made by Dawn Johnsen, who has been appointed by President Obama to head the Office of Legal Counsel in the Department of Justice.

  1. What an unhappy person. Of course I'd rather her not impose her unhappiness on the rest of us by serving in public office.

  2. Icky and totally disconnected from real goodness. Her understanding of pregnancy as it relates to being a woman and a mother is so alien, I can't wrap my mind around it.

  3. Hard to believe that such statements can be uttered without a general backlash. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

P.S. I have been unable to receive feeds from this site for several months now. I tried from another computer and got the same lack of results.

  5. She is merely restating the arguments of Judith Thompson's famous "Defense of Abortion," which is taught in many (perhaps most) undergraduate ethics classes in the country. The rot in our nation's moral reasoning is that deep.

Almost as disturbing, given that she has been appointed to the Office of Legal Counsel (basically the white house's authority on Constitutional law), is her fanciful approach to the 13th Amendment. If the amendment can bear the meaning that she gives it, it is hard to imagine that she can find any fixed meaning in the whole document. The Constitution is no longer the law of the land in such a case; it is merely the raw material for the lawyers who rule to shape as they will.
