Making Room at the Inn...

Happy Advent!

Today is the first day of the new Church year, and as such, I think some resolutions are in order...

The Church, in her wisdom, begins the liturgical year with Advent, a season of preparation and anticipation. What better way to begin anew? It's a unique opportunity to take a sort of "spiritual inventory" and examine where in your life you might need to make an adjustment or shift some priorities around in order to really make room for Him.

At our house this year, we're trying something new in the hope that Advent becomes for us a real time of preparation. Next to our Nativity scene we have a small red gift box with a top that lifts off, and a pad of Christmas notepaper. Each day, (or as often as we can manage) we'll have the opportunity to write baby Jesus a little note, mentioning a good deed we performed, an occasion of sin that was avoided, or a moment of pain or frustration that was offered up rather than resented. At the end of Advent, we'll have (hopefully!) a box full of Christmas presents for Him!

No one will read the notes, of course, that's not the point. They're for His eyes only, and to keep our hearts focused on the real reason for the Christmas season. Our prayer is that this time when He comes, He'll find a place prepared for Him, a place to lay His tiny head in hearts that have been anticipating His arrival.

Have a blessed and beautiful Advent season.
